Here we have a superb stalking tool for the mobile angler looking for the challenges associated with float fishing. This rig has been developed to over come the problems associated with float fishing for large fish such as carp.
This problem is foul-hookink, as the carp or other large fish swim about in your baited swim their flanks, fins and belly often catch your main line leading to false bites and foul-hooking.
Nobody likes to foul hook fish, so this rig has arisen from the need for an alternative to the usual laying on type float rigs.
With other float set-ups you are normally looking for the float to dip beneath the surface layer as the fish takes your bait and moves away. This is what causes the foul hooking as you strike not into the fishes mouth but some other part of the body. With the lift method you strike when the float lifts from beneath the surface film as the fish actually picks up the bait in its lips, a much more sensitive rig altogether.
There is nothing complicated about this rig. Use a small hook which compliments the size of the bait you are using, for instance a size 14mm bait would be best used with a size 6 - 8 bottom bait pattern with the ESP Raptor Big T's being ideal for the job. In the image we have used braid but this can be substituted with a mono main line if you prefer.
The float should be small and unobtrusive, a pole float is best. The weight holding down the float needs to be heavier than the float, but only just. Rig putty molded around a slip knot is great. The hookbait you use will depend on factors such as angling pressure, time of year and weather conditions. If the fish you are targeting live in a pressured water where they have learnt to be suspicious of baits, then opting for a worm or maybe even maggots for your hook bait often produces when other baits will not.
The medusa rig method of maggot application will be useful in this situation. Remember when using worm to only hook it on once. There is no need to hook it multiple times and all that will do is kill the worm quicker. On waters where the fish don't receive much pressure then your choices are greatly expanded.
